DESCRIPTION:
APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 91, three-finger bridge mvt, 16S, heavy 18K gold J&S (Jeannot & Shiebler) HC recase with gold cuvette and glazed observational mvt cover, white glass enamel DS canister-style (friction fit snap-on) dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, raised gold jewel settings, nickel damascene, s#942064. Gross weight of assembled watch 83.1 dwt (129.3 g). A rare top grade movement, we believe that total production of the Grade 91 was approximately 350 made. Although a single run of 1000 serial numbers spanning 942001 to 943000 was blocked for Grade 91 production it appears that nearly two-thirds of this serial range was never completed, as all examples we have observed have fallen neatly within only the 942001 to 942350 portion of this run.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, few scattered minuscule dark spots; dial with very faint hls above seconds-register, scratch within seconds-register below center, very small scratch to outer chapter at 2:30, tiny edge flakes under bezel at 5:30; fine hands; case front opens slightly wide of 90 degrees (to approximately 100 degrees), case shows light to medium wear, shallow crease type dent toward front right perimeter, some mild dings to front and rear, dent to band at 7, few dings elsewhere to band, reduced engine turning detail with some portions of full loss at shoulders, rear hinge missing an end-cap; tight bow, crown shows ample wear; good glass crystal front crystal, clean plastic observational mvt cover.
